Melville T Wire American Impressionist Painter Photo Rppc Portrait Signature Lot

This true antique original lot of real photo postcards from c1911 depicting, and holding correspondence, of the Oregon impressionist painter Melville T Wire were all found together in a collection. A very rare and delightful find considering there are portraits of the artist painting along with postcards he photographed, wrote, and signed himself.

This collection comes with the 5 real photo postcards pictured in this listing. The images show the front and back of the photo postcards. The first two are taken by someone else, which depict Melville with his easel and the subject of his painting being an old log cabin settlement. The other three photographs show a self portrait of Melville painting and two scenes near Lakeview, Oregon; all three of which contain written correspondence and signatures on the verso. One note even includes bible verses, as he was an ordained minister.

These are earlier views of him working as Melville was in his 30's at the time. It would be fascinating to compare the photo of the cabin with the painting he created, however I was not able to find a picture of that particular painting online. A wonderful, historic set suitable for historic preservation, collection, and display.

An impressionist painter, Melville Wire was an ordained Methodist minister in Oregon and serving parishes throughout the state for sixty-one years, painted on canvas the countryside he traveled by car. In addition to painting hundreds of oils, he produced over thirty etchings of landscapes. Combined, his many scenes of Oregon make him "one of the state's foremost chroniclers of its diverse scenery" before modern development. He was not a part of any organized group of painters but was a solitary figure using impressionist style to convey his feelings about the land he loved.
